Ngày nay, thảo dược không sử dụng trực tiếp nữa mà người ta sẽ chiết xuất các hoạt chất của chúng và đưa vào bài thuốc để hỗ trợ điều trị bệnh, từ đó người bệnh có thể sử dụng đơn giản hơn, không cần phải qua các công đoạn nấu sắc, sao vàng hạ thổ như trước kia, đồng thời một số sản phẩm thực phẩm chức năng được quảng cáo là chiết xuất hoàn toàn từ thảo dược, chính vì điều này đã gây nên sự nhầm lẫn giữa hai loại này.
